Gowanus Gardens

Gowanus is a neighborhood built next to an EPA designated Superfund site. The following images were created in collaboration with Mandy Licata to visualize our data collected during on-site research, and led us to a final speculative project that explores a possible distant future for this wealthy neighborhood.

What you’ll see:
  • Data visualization
  • Satirical warning
  • Seed packets

TOP FINDINGS:

Prior to becoming a wealthy neighborhood, Gowanus was known as an industrial work area.
Gowanus is one of three Superfund sites in NYC.
The neighborhood is family friendly.
The neighborhood is skate and sticker culture friendly.
Unlike most of NYC, Gowanus has many parking lots throughout the neighborhood.

As a final exploration we pivoted to focus on the flora (or lack thereof) in Gowanus. By exploring a future where the residents of the neighborhood would have to source vegetation on their own, we created speculative radioactive plants that would be able to grow with the polluted waters of the canal.

The planting instructions on each packet contain techniques used in real gamma gardens where plants grow while exposed to various levels of radiation. Flora mutations were inspired by DNA changes observed in plants growing in Chernobyl.
